IBM Webcast: Sametime Resolve, Notes IM, and LDAP performance considerations – 10 June 2009

Filed under: Sametime, Technical Support, Technology

On June 10, 2009 I will present at an IBM Webcast on the topic of performance considerations for Lotus Sametime when using Sametime Resolve, Lotus Notes Instant Messaging, and LDAP.

Sametime Quickfind, Notes Inbox awareness, and many other features can generate a substantial number of name resolutions requests. These requests can severely impact performance and capacity in a production environment.  Join us on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. EDT (14:00 GMT) in this IBM Webcast as we talk about several recommendations and solutions you can implement today to reduce impact of name lookups on your Sametime infrastructure.

Hold the date: IBM Webcast on Reducing the Impact of Name Lookups on a Sametime Infrastructure

Filed under: Sametime, Technical Support, Technology

On June 10th at 10am EST, I will be presenting an IBM Webcast on Reducing the Impact of Name Lookups on a Sametime Infrastructure. Everytime a user searches for a person or group, scrolls through their inbox or authenticates to a server, a name lookup request is generated. A single scroll through an inbox view can easily generate more than 30 name lookup requests!

In this webcast, I will cover some of the recommendations IBM support is making and the solutions you can implement today to optimize the name resolution load on your Sametime server and your directory.

I will post another blog entry once I have the conference information for the meeting.

Sametime Applets will expire on May 18th – Download and install the updated applets now

Filed under: General, IBM Software, Notes/Domino, Sametime, Technical Support, Technology

The certificates which were used to sign the Sametime Applets (Meeting Room client, Sametime Java Connect, Directory Applet, Sametime Links), will expire on May 18th this year.  IBM has been working to resign these applets as quickly as possible.  All of the applets from Sametime 7.0 to 8.0.2 have been resigned with the updated certificate.  If you do not update the applet files on the server, users will see a Java security prompt asking them to approve the execution of the applet.  However, users will still be able to use the applet.

Here’s the best news though.  You do not need to open a support ticket with IBM to download the updated applets.  They are available on IBM Fix Central for immediate download!  For installation instruction and download information, see IBM Technote 1390778.

The Domino Applets will also expire on May 18th. Information on downloading the Domino Applets is available in IBM Technote 1381298.

IT Tip: How to Disable the Windows Event Tracker

Have you ever been annoyed by the Windows Shutdown Event Tracker?  I know I have been and it is one of the first things I disable during a server build.  Most people I have spoken to will type in a random set of characters just to bypass this prompt.  Here is how you disable it so you don’t have to put up with it in the first place.

  1. Click on Start-Run.
  2. Once the Run prompt has open, type in “gpedit.msc” and click OK.
  3. In the Group Policy Editor, expand the following branches: Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates.
  4. Click on the System Folder in the tree.
  5. Browse through the parameters on the right side for “Display Shutdown Event Tracker”.  When you have found it, double click to open it.
  6. Set the value to “Disabled”.
  7. Click Apply and watch the Windows Event tracker annoy you for the last time!

Windows 7 Release Candidate is now available

The Windows 7 Release Candidate is now available to the public for download. I have been using this as my primary workstation operating system since it was available for download via MSDN. So far, I am more impressed by this operating system over Windows Vista. It is more user friendly than Vista now that I don’t get prompted for administrative rights. Internet Explorer 8 does have its issues as it indicates that a page is not responding when it actually is still download and rendering content. Overall, it seems pretty solid and looks promising for the future.

However that being said, I would still prefer a Mac with its multimedia capabilities over a PC!
