Sametime Applets will expire on May 18th – Download and install the updated applets now

Filed under: General, IBM Software, Notes/Domino, Sametime, Technical Support, Technology

The certificates which were used to sign the Sametime Applets (Meeting Room client, Sametime Java Connect, Directory Applet, Sametime Links), will expire on May 18th this year.  IBM has been working to resign these applets as quickly as possible.  All of the applets from Sametime 7.0 to 8.0.2 have been resigned with the updated certificate.  If you do not update the applet files on the server, users will see a Java security prompt asking them to approve the execution of the applet.  However, users will still be able to use the applet.

Here’s the best news though.  You do not need to open a support ticket with IBM to download the updated applets.  They are available on IBM Fix Central for immediate download!  For installation instruction and download information, see IBM Technote 1390778.

The Domino Applets will also expire on May 18th. Information on downloading the Domino Applets is available in IBM Technote 1381298.

Running Sametime 8.0.2 on Domino 8.5

Filed under: Notes/Domino, Sametime, Technical Support, Technology

Several administrators have been trying to run Sametime 8.0.2 on Domino 8.5.  I would like to let all of you know that this is an unsupported configuration at this time.  Those that have tried have experienced issues such as certain community services not starting.  Unfortunately the only way to correct this configuration is to uninstall both the Domino and Sametime server, and then reinstall again.

We are planning to have Domino 8.5 in the next release of Sametime.

Speeding up Notes 8.5

Filed under: Notes/Domino, Technical Support, Technology

As many of your know, Notes 8.5 is now available for download and use.  Notes 8.5 represents more ways to improve collaboration and access information.  However for all of us Mac users, it also represents the introduction of Lotus Notes for the Mac again.  One of the largest complaints which I have heard revolves around the speed of the client.  Andrew Polluck published a blog entry a while back which I would like to reiterate.  If you have the extra RAM in your workstation, I would strongly recommend that you take advantage of this tip.

Lotusphere '09. Are you ready?

Several of us in the IBM Sametime Support Group finally finished submitting our abstract submissions for Lotusphere 2009 after much consideration and rewriting. This year I have cosubmitted several aspects with two extremely talented engineers and in the hope that we will have at least one accepted. We have selected topics around administration, best practices and educations that we believe that customers, consultants and IBMers should have to maximize infrastructure uptimes and minimize problems when performing major operations such as migrations or upgrades. All of us are assuming that there were a large number of high quality submissions this year and competitions for presentation slots will be extremely fierce. And so the countdown begins as we wait for responses from the IBM Lotusphere Track Committees and their decisions on what will make up the talks for next year’s Lotusphere event.

Below are the topics we have submitted (in no particular order):

  • IBM Middleware: What you really need to know about IBM WebSphere and DB2
  • Building your Sametime Architecture: Do it once and do it right!
  • Optimize your Sametime environment like no tomorrow
  • Architecting a High Availability Sametime Environment (aka how to get your 99.999% availability)
  • Integrating IBM Lotus Sametime as part of your Business Transformation
  • How to ensure a quick, seemless and successful Sametime Upgrade
  • Rev it up! Sametime Performance Considerations
  • How to avoid disaster in your collaboration environment. A guide on administering and keeping your Sametime environment in tip-top shape
  • A Hitchhikers Guide to the Sametime Gateway
  • The dos and don’ts of administering your collaboration environment
  • What’s the worst that can happen with Lotus Sametime?
  • Sametime Unyte, Gateway, Advanced, Standard and Telephony…are you lost yet? A primer on installing the right tools for your environment
  • Meet the Front Line: Sametime L2 Experts at your service
  • Architecting a Highly Available Sametime Gateway environment
  • Sametime can do what ? ;-)

Reminder: Lotusphere 2009 Abstract Submissions due 12 noon EST Today!

Anyone who is planning to submit a Lotusphere 2009 Abstract needs to remember that it is due by 12 noon EST today. I have a couple in progress which I plan to submit before the deadline. Unlike last year, I have not seen any indication that the deadline will be extended, so get your thinking caps on and crank out some abstracts!
